It&#8217;s a Polish symbol that became a Polish underground rallying point during World War II. It&#8217;s pictured here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/poland.leonkonieczny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Kotwica-120px-Flaga_PPP.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1050\" src=\"https:\/\/poland.leonkonieczny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Kotwica-120px-Flaga_PPP.svg_.png\" alt=\"Kotwica-120px-Flaga_PPP.svg\" width=\"120\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The symbol started as a stylized acronym for <i>Pom\u015bcimy Wawer<\/i> (&#8220;We shall avenge Wawer&#8221;). This was a reference to the Wawer massacre (26\u201327 December 1939), which was considered to be one of the first large scale massacres of Polish civilians by German troops in occupied Poland.\u00a0It looks like an anchor, hence <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kotwica\" target=\"_blank\">kowica<\/a>. During the war it became a symbol for the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa), and a sign of the underground and underground activities. Many such activities were &#8220;signed&#8221; with the kotwica.\u00a0\u00a0Over time it came to symbolize the phrase <i>Polska Walcz\u0105ca<\/i> (&#8220;Fighting Poland&#8221;), P-W.<\/p>\n<p>Today it is also a symbol also used to remember the Warsaw Uprising which ended 71 years ago, on October 2nd, 1944. Today it stands for, among other things P-W, remember Warsaw (<em>pami\u0119tacie warszawa<\/em>) and also for the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.1944.pl\/\">Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego<\/a><\/em>, the Warsaw Uprising Museum, which i had the good fortune to visit in 2011.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kotwica is the Polish word for Anchor.
