{"id":944,"date":"2014-07-15T06:37:54","date_gmt":"2014-07-15T10:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poland.leonkonieczny.com\/blog\/?p=944"},"modified":"2014-07-15T06:37:54","modified_gmt":"2014-07-15T10:37:54","slug":"battle-of-grunwald","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poland.leonkonieczny.com\/blog\/?p=944","title":{"rendered":"Battle of Grunwald"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, July 15, 2014, marks 604 years since the <a title=\"Battle of Grunwald\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Grunwald\" target=\"_blank\">Battle of Grunwald<\/a> in 1410. It was at this battle that the combined forces of the Kingdom Poland and the Duchy of Lithuania once and for all decisively defeated the German Teutonic Knights. Their crushing defeat resulting in the Peace of Toru\u0144 (1411) and finally the Peace of Melno (1422), but this battle effectively &#8220;broke the backs&#8221; of these unwelcome &#8220;visitors&#8221; and it\u00a0<span style=\"color: #252525;\">marked the rise of the\u00a0<\/span>Polish\u2013Lithuanian union<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0as the dominant political and military force in\u00a0central and Eastern Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Though long gone from Poland, the Teutonic Knights left behind a &#8220;wonder&#8221; of Poland that is not to be missed, <a title=\"Malbork\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malbork\" target=\"_blank\">Malbork Castle<\/a>, the largest brick castle in Europe. I was fortunate to <a title=\"Malbork\" href=\"https:\/\/poland.leonkonieczny.com\/blog\/?p=76\" target=\"_blank\">visit Malbork<\/a> on my first tour of Poland, and I posted some of <a title=\"My Malbork Photos\" href=\"http:\/\/poland.leonkonieczny.com\/images\/2010PolandTour\/03%20Malbork\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">my photos<\/a> from that tour.
