On Vacation

As of now, I am technically on vacation. My voice mail and email out of office messages are sent, all my tasks are covered, and for the next 18 days I need have no contact with work. It will be welcome getaway, made all the better by my trip.

As of now, I am pretty much on track with everything. I have my clothes all laid out, toiletries ready to go, and (most importantly) electronics lined up. I am even packing an extension cord to act as a three-way to connect multiple devices. I think i have it all covered. I still have a few last minute things to purchase, but mostly for around the house. The mail will be stopped (thanks USPS for letting me do that online), the bills are paid ahead (and with my iPhone i can check my bank and credit card accounts online), and i have my home care all arranged for. It’s gonna be a long weekend of waiting now.

In a holding pattern

I feel like I’m in a bit of a holding pattern. I have lots of lists here and there, and clothes and suitcases all laid out on the bed and dressers in the guest bedroom. But I think it’s too early to pack. I guess in my mind I already packed a lot, plus I need one or two more things. I already have a good idea of what I’m taking, and what I’m not. I will probably leave the actual packing for Sunday. By then it has to be done. I just have this picture of me sitting by the front door, bags, packed, waiting to go…and it’s only Friday!

In other news, I continue to study my Polish. Not that it will help me a lot on this trip, but that I want to learn it. I am learning a variety of useful words. I am using Rosetta Stone and it is good so far. today I was learning hot, cold, hungry, full, weak, strong, and things like that. Useful for sure. And I hope to get much more chance to use it in the future.

So, I’m slowly getting ready, and getting very excited, more so day by day!

Making a list, checking it twice…

…gonna find out if I’m naughty or nice… Ooops! wrong season.

But, I have been knee deep in lists recently. I’ve read a lot on the Internet on what to pack–and what not to pack–for a trip to Europe. Remember, this is a first for me. So I’ve been looking for some good advice, and I’ve found a lot. A friend at work sent me her list–very helpful. There are a number of web sites–somewhat helpful since they don’t all seem to agree. But through it all I believe I’ve managed to distill it down to some good info on what to take and what to leave behind.

I think I’ll be a minimalist as far as clothes… I can wash and many hotels have a laundry service, why waste a lot of time on a lot of clothes. I have to have my electronic toys, so that means my digital DSLR, my netbook, my iPhone, etc. I will be connected, I will update my blog and do email. And I will take a ton of photos.

So, I am working from a number of lists, checking them twice, cross-referencing and comparing them. But if worse comes to worse, I’m going to pack on the side of “light” with the idea that I can buy it there!

How this all began….

This whole Poland trip thing started in, I’d say, March or so when a letter arrived in the mail. I rarely get much of value in the mail, even my bills are generally electronic. So when I do get a “real” letter, that is a special event. This was a very short note from my sister with a brochure enclosed. The note said something like “thought you might be interested in this trip led by my friend Chris,” or words to that effect. I took a look at the brochure–a two week trip to Poland. I read it over and it sounded really interesting, but two weeks? And the cost was not inexpensive. So I set it aside. But later I picked i up again. I thought, “no way.”  But a little voice in my head kept saying “why not?” And I had no good answer. So, within a few days, I talked it over with some friends and they all said “why not?” I detected a theme there. My friend from work, Jennifer, had been there some years ago and said “why not,” and i recalled her excitement having been there. I called my sister Mary, and she said that her friend Chris, who has led a number of tours to Poland, told her it was his best yet. She asked “why not?” So, I got out the checkbook and sent in my deposit. And the rest is history.

Well, actually there is more. I mentioned to a few people I know that I was going and sent that info to a few via email. I may even have posted it on Facebook. The son of my Mom’s cousin (my second cousin, Scott, if you can follow me here) asked me about it. I sent him the brochure and he sent it on to his Mother. She said that she was probably going next year with some group. Oh well… but wait….

It was the middle of May when I got an email from Pat, Scott’s mother. Pat is my mother’s cousin. She and another cousin of theirs, Sonja, had been chatting, and Pat mentioned that I was going to Poland. Well, one thing led to another and they called Chris the tour leader and before you know it, they signed up as well. I was amazed and overjoyed when I got that email. How wonderful it will be to go to Poland, and what a joy than I can share it with two of my relatives. I know that this will be a great trip and a lot of fun and I am so looking forward to it.

But there is still more. I dont’ think of this visit as my one trip to Poland. Not in the slightest. I think of this as my foot in the door, my testing of the waters. It’s my first trip outside the US (not counting a few miles into Canada when I was a kid). But I expect it to be the first of many trips to Poland and to Europe in general. I want to see the land that my ancestors came from, all of it. I want to understand what it is they left behind, and what it is that they brought with them and that still lives inside of me to this day. So this is only the beginning of something very exciting….

Testing from my iPhone

OK… You know I love my iPhone. It’s nice to know I will be able to update this from it as well. How cool is that?

Welcome to my Poland Blog

Let the fun begin! I’ve set up this blog so i can keep in contact with my family and friends during my upcoming trip to Poland. I hope to be able to spend a bit of time each day (Internet connection dependent of course) to let you know what I’ve been doing and what I’ve been up to. Don’t expect a lot of fancy pictures and the like while I’m in Poland–I’m spending my time sightseeing and soaking up all I can. But when I get back, you know I’ll be going through the tons and tons of photos I’ve took and will post many.

So sit back, fasten your seatbelt, and let the great adventure begin–one week from right now I’ll be in the air somewhere over the Gulf of St. Lawrence, well on my way to Poland.
