Less Than Five Days!

In less than five days, I will be back in Poland again. I am so excited. Tonight I really began to pack things up. It’s hard to know how to pack for 3 weeks–21 days–in only one suitcase of under 50 pounds and a 13 pound carry-on. And to leave room for souvenirs and stuff to bring back, too. Though I imagine I could/would ship stuff back if needed too. Not sure what I’ll find but maybe a few things I’d like to find:

  • Wycinanki. I found some great Wycinanki (paper cuttings) in Krakow last year and they now are framed and adorn my living room wall. I’d like to find more.
  • Szopka. I found a nice but small one last year. I’d like a bigger one but would want to ship that, they are pretty fragile
  • T-Shirts. Hey, it’s the “normal” souvenir, I’d have to get a few, and from Ukraine, too.
  • Books and maps. Well, it all depends on what I find. Maybe some tour guides from some of the places we visit? Who knows what I’ll find.

But most of all will be the memories I take back with me, and the many, many photos I take. I sure hope they don’t mind my taking photos of everything, including food, meals, places we’ll visit, etc. A picture is worth a thousand words, for sure!

6 Days and Counting down…

Yes, only six days from now and I will be back in Poland. I was reflecting on that today and realized that in my last post yesterday, I forgot a huge chunk of what I hope to experience, and that is the food of Poland. Last time I was there I totally enjoyed the food (and drink) and I’m sure this time will be on a par with that, maybe even wildly exceed it.

Some of what I hope to experience:

  • Home Cooking. Maybe I’ll even have the chance to help and maybe learn something. And at the very least I know how to chop stuff and can do the dishes
  • New Foods (perhaps prepared in old ways). I’m sure there are dishes I’ve never had before. I don’t think i tried naleśniki (at least not savory ones) last time. There may be other dishes as well. I’d like to try new foods.
  • Old Foods (perhaps prepared in new ways). I had the best mushrooms and mushroom sauce ever last year in Poland. I’m sure I can have equally good or better this time. And what else? There are many foods that I’d love to experience with maybe a Polish twist to them.
  • Pierogi. Need I say more. This is food of the gods, definitely.
  • Bigos. All I can say is “yumm.” There are so many varieties, and each I’m sure will be wonderful.
  • Ukrainian Food. I’ve never had much besides varenyky (вареники). Now is the time! I remember having these years and years ago at the International Folk Festival in Milwaukee. Wonderful. And I’m sure there’s more.
  • Polish beer and Polish Vodka. Oh yeah!
  • Kiełbasa, kabunosy, and other smoked delicacies
  • Oscypek and other Polish cheeses. I love cheese of all type.
  • Vegetables and Fruits. It will be great to taste whatever is in season.

And so much more. Yumm, I am getting hungry now. I can’t wait!

7 Days from Today….

…I will be in Poland again. Wow, what a dream come true. I have high hopes for this trip. I expect to see a lot, do a lot, learn a lot, soak up a lot.

Among the things I’m hoping for:

  • Meet and get to know as much of my family there as possible
  • Speak and understand Polish to at least some easy level…and practice my Polish a lot
  • See some more castles
  • Visit some museums
  • Visit other historic spots and learn more about the history of Poland
  • See the towns in Ukraine where my great-grandparents come from, soak up the atmosphere, understand the country and area they loved and gave up when the left for America.
  • Drive on Polish roads!
  • Go grocery shopping.
  • Participate in daily routine. Wash dishes. Wash clothes. Sweep. Vacuum. Normal stuff.

I’m sure I’ll experience that and lots more. So in the meantime, I am making my preparations here, deciding what I need to pack, trying to take only what I need. And getting my electronic toys in order (cell phone, Netbook).

I will be writing as much as I can to share my experiences here. So keep checking back. I may not be able to post something every day, but I plan on giving a full account of my adventure, my continuing adventures in Poland, a land and people and place that I love.

    In Only Ten Short Days….

I will be in Poland! I am wildly excited about it. Another “trip of a lifetime” after last year’s trip with the same accolade. So at the moment, i am somewhat busy getting ready. To some extent, this trip will be a bit more relaxing as it will not involve constantly changing hotel rooms, getting on and off of a tour bus, and running in and out of places. This time I’ll be spending time with family, and some of us will be travelling together at our own pace. I know my cousin Alicja wants to help me experience the heart and soul of Polish culture, and I’m sure I will.

So, I continue to slowly get ready, to ponder what clothes to take, all the little details. But somehow I’m sure it’ll all work out. And I am very excited about it!

When the time comes, and when I’m there, I do plan on updating my blog as much as I am able to. My plan is to write each day but of course I’ll only be able to publish when I have an Internet connection. Poland is a modern country and so I expect that will not be an issue anyway. So look forward to reading what I have to say and enjoying my view of Poland and my experiences.

    Two Weeks from Right Now…

….I will be in an airplane, high above the Atlantic Ocean, hopefully sound asleep, and about ready to embark on a new adventure, exploring Poland, a land/country/culture/people/spirit that I truly love. I do not know what all awaits me. To some extent, it’s the great unknown, just like my ancestors experienced about 100 years ago when then came to America. But just as they found America to be their land of opportunity, I am sure that I will find Poland to be my land of experience, knowlegde, and growth. I am so looking forward to this trip… the second of many, I am sure!

    Trip Preparations

I am busy preparing for my trip to Poland, and getting very excited about it. I have been reading about some of the many places we will visit when we’re there. There is so much history and so much to see and do, it is amazing.

I am also busy studying Polish, still. I am using Rosetta Stone and a few other things as well. It is coming along fine. I know a lot of words but do not necessarily have the skill needed to put together sentences correctly. Truly I will speak in “broken” or “bad” Polish, but then again, I am sure that I can be understood and will get along very well. Between English, Polish, pointing, gesturing, and maybe drawing, I’ll get along fine.

    Three Weeks from Today

At this moment in three weeks, I’ll be high above the Atlantic Ocean, on my way back to Poland. What a dream this is, and one that will come to pass.

I was so fortunate to meet my cousin Alicja on the Internet several years ago. And then fortune smiled on us and we met last year in Gdańsk and she and her husband invited me to visit, so I will. I will spend about a week in the Gdańsk area where we have many family, and we will spend about two weeks traveling around Poland and Ukraine, seeing many great sights and also visiting family in Ukraine where our common ancestors originally lived, and where we still have family.

So in the meantime I am preparing. I have been diligently trying to learn some Polish, and I’m sure I can speak a few phrases of broken Polish when I’m there–actually, i know quite a few words, but getting them right will be my challenge. Still, i think I’ll be able to communicate fine.

So I have started making my lists, getting ready to pack, reading about some of the places we will visit. It is all good and I am very excited. And of course I will be updating my blog whenever I am able to when I am there. I do not know what my Internet connectivity may be, but I will prepare entries and upload them whenever I’m able to fine a WiFi connection. God knows I was able to do so at a McDonald’s in Kraków my last time there.

And I am sure this will not be my last visit to Poland. However, I am looking foward to Alicja and her family to come here for a visit in the near future. I will show them a very good time, too.

    Four Weeks from Today….

…. I will be back in Poland. To say I am excited is an understatement. When I first went to Poland last year, it was like a dream…it was the trip of a lifetime. But life changes. When I went there, I met my third cousin, Alicja, and some of her family. And they graciously invited me back. So, I am going back this year, for three weeks, to visit them and to see more of Poland.

My blog is titled “Moja miłość do Polski ” because it is about my love of Poland. But I really don’t know Poland all that well. For many years I have read about Poland and her people, dreamed about going there, and in recent years, and particularly last year, was able to make that dream a reality. But I only had a taste. Just a little taste. My trip across Poland last year was a mere sampling of little bits of the country and her people, her culture, her history, her place in destiny. This year, I will get to know some of her people, to live with them, to travel with them, and even to talk with them–in my own poor broken Polish. I cannot wait, I am so excited.

So I know that when I get off that plane in Gdańsk next month, it will be the beginning of another great adventure. I will write about it every day, for sure, and will post what I do on this blog whenever I can get a connection to the Internet–I am not sure when that will be, but trust me, I will be writing everything down, to remember it as best I can, and taking a lot of picture. But mostly my heart and soul will be drinking up the spirit of Poland. I know that this is not my last trip, but only the beginning of many more.

So, in four short weeks, the next phase of my adventure in Poland begins. I can hardly bear the waiting. The time will go by quickly!

    Jacek Kawalec

Tonight I met and was entertained by Jacek Kawalec. If you don’t live in Poland, you may know know who I am talking about. But Jacek Kawalec is a famous Polish Actor. Some years ago, he was in the Polish version of Dancing with the Stars and this September he will begin filming the fifth set of 13 episodes of a serial television program that is popular on Polish Television, Ranczo.

So how did this come to be? Well, I am attending a series of Polish classes, every Wednesday night in Poland. His wife is a friend of our class teacher, Kasia, since they were three years old. Jacek was in Orlando with his 13-year old son and his mother (from Chicago) to visit. And so we were graced by his presence tonight.

He did some acting, a selection from a one-person show, and some singing, both in Polish and English. First time I ever heard the song “Lucille” in Polish!  It was very entertaining, he talked a lot about film and theater and TV and even music and culture in Poland. It was a very pleasant time and he was most gracious.

    Union of Lublin

In just a few weeks (well, about 6), I will be in Poland. And during my travels there, I hope to get to Lublin. Lublin is a historic city for may reasons, but today, July 1st, is a special day in the history of Poland, and Lublin is a part of it.

The Union of Lublin was an agreement between Poland and Lithuania. It was signed July 1, 1569, in Lublin, Poland, and created a single State, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Under this agreement, a single elected monarch carried out the duties of both the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania. The monarch governed along with senate and parliament, called the Sejm. This new union replaced teh Polish-Lithuanian Union which had been established in about 1386. In 1791 the Union of Lublin was replaced by the First Polish Constitution, the second constitution in the western world after that of the newly formed United States of America, only a few years early.

I hope to see some exciting things when I’m in Lublin in August. I’ll write about it here, for sure!
